Navigating the city with a pet has never been easier, thanks to the R-T-A’s latest 2026 infrastructure updates. As part of the ’20-minute city’ vision, Dubai has expanded its pet-friendly transit options beyond just outdoor parks. Selected routes on the autonomous shuttle network and designated ‘Pet-Friendly’ carriages on the light rail systems are now fully operational, allowing residents to travel with their companions across the city’s most popular districts.
To use these services, pet owners must apply for a ‘Pet Transit Permit’ through the R-T-A app. The permit requires a one-time registration of the animal’s microchip and a valid vaccination record, costing AED 200 annually. Once registered, your pet’s profile is linked to your Nol card. When you tap into a pet-friendly zone or vehicle, the system automatically verifies the permit.
This initiative has significantly lowered the cost of pet ownership for those living in high-density areas like J-V-C or Dubai Hills. Instead of relying on expensive private pet taxis, which can cost upwards of AED 100 per trip, residents can now move between grooming appointments, vet visits, and dog parks for the price of a standard metro fare. The new 2026 rules also include ‘Quiet Zones’ within transit hubs to ensure that animals remain calm during the journey. This thoughtful integration of pet logistics into the public transport fabric is a testament to Dubai’s commitment to an inclusive, family-oriented urban lifestyle.
