Trade relations between the UAE and the Philippines have reached a new milestone with the official signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This agreement serves as the Philippines’ first free trade pact with a Middle Eastern nation, underscoring the UAE’s growing influence as a global trade hub and its commitment to diversifying its economic partners. The deal was formalized in Abu Dhabi during a meeting between UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. This partnership is expected to double bilateral non-oil trade, which reached nearly $1.83 billion in 2024. Under the new terms, approximately 95 percent of Philippine exports to the UAE will receive preferential tariff treatment. This includes major exports such as electronics, machinery, bananas, and canned tuna. On the other hand, UAE-based investors will find it easier to enter the Philippine market, particularly in sectors like energy, infrastructure, and logistics. Beyond the exchange of goods, the CEPA provides a stable and non-discriminatory environment for service providers. This is a significant win for Filipino professionals in the UAE, especially in fields like IT, healthcare, and education. By removing administrative barriers and enhancing regulatory transparency, both nations are creating a seamless corridor for businesses to flourish. This agreement also strengthens the UAE’s ‘Economic 33’ goals, which aim to double the country’s foreign trade by 2033. The pact highlights the resilience of the UAE market and its ability to forge strong, mutually beneficial ties with fast-growing economies in Southeast Asia.
