Whether you have been driving on UAE roads for many years or have just received your driving license, there are certain practices that you should avoid, according to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
In its handbook for light motor vehicle learners, the authority emphasizes that our driving habits reflect our thoughts and behaviors. When driving, there are behaviors that are not only dangerous but also unacceptable.
Let’s take a closer look at ten driving behaviors that you should steer clear of and understand why they are problematic:
- Driving too fast for the situation: This gives you very little time to react and avoid a potential collision.
- Tailgating or driving too close to the vehicle in front of you: This often leads to distraction, tension, and sudden lane changes by other drivers, increasing the risk of an accident.
- Flashing headlights or honking to intimidate other drivers: Such actions create tension and hostility among drivers on the road.
- Cutting in front of other drivers or jumping the queue: This behavior not only annoys other drivers but also worsens the traffic situation.
- Not using the indicator when changing lanes: Failing to signal increases the risk of a collision, as other drivers are not prepared for an unexpected lane change.
- Driving slowly in the fast lane: This is as dangerous as speeding, as it forces other drivers to brake or change lanes to avoid the slow vehicle. The RTA advises using the slow lane and only using the fast lane for overtaking.
- Ignoring priority rules: This includes disregarding “Give way” or “Stop” signs, failing to consider the speed and position of other motorists when entering the road, and ignoring pedestrians crossing the road.
- Intentionally speeding up or blocking other drivers indicating a turn or change in direction: This behavior creates tension and frustration among drivers.

- Deliberately accelerating or obstructing other drivers who are signaling a turn or change in direction can create a tense atmosphere on the road.
- Engaging in phone usage while driving, even with a hands-free device, diverts your attention from the primary task of driving. This lack of focus can lead to decreased speed, increased speed, drifting across lanes, or making sudden turns without signaling.
- Operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited in Dubai. The consequences for drunk driving are severe, including hefty fines, imprisonment, license confiscation, and vehicle impoundment. Moreover, this reckless behavior not only jeopardizes your own safety but also endangers the lives of others on the road, as emphasized in the handbook.
