Abu Dhabi is significantly advancing its digital transformation initiatives with the introduction of the ‘V City’ project, an innovative AI-equipped vehicle system designed to bolster road safety and optimize traffic management across the emirate. This strategic deployment aims to proactively identify and address road hazards, ranging from vehicular accidents and fallen trees to malfunctioning traffic lights.
The ‘V City’ project forms a key component of the ambitious Abu Dhabi Digital Government Strategy 2025–2027. This broader strategy outlines a clear path towards integrating over 200 cutting-edge AI solutions and achieving 100% digitization of government processes by 2027. The overarching goal is to establish a sophisticated digital layer that seamlessly connects sensing capabilities with advanced analysis, informed decision-making, and rapid response mechanisms, ultimately ensuring safer and more efficient traffic flow throughout Abu Dhabi.
At its core, the system integrates an extensive network of over 1,500 surveillance cameras, complemented by 253 vehicle sensors and 922 traffic signals. This comprehensive infrastructure allows for the continuous collection and analysis of data from more than 30 distinct sources. The intelligent processing of this vast dataset enables the ‘V City’ system to automate response plans, ensuring swift action is taken when incidents occur.
Furthermore, the system is designed to communicate critical information directly to road users in real-time. This is achieved through a network of 122 electronic message boards strategically positioned across Abu Dhabi’s road network. By providing timely updates on road conditions, hazards, and traffic flow, the project aims to empower drivers to make better-informed decisions, thereby reducing congestion and enhancing overall road safety. The ‘V City’ initiative underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology for urban development and resident well-being, positioning the city at the forefront of smart infrastructure innovation.
